Why Don't You Share A Good Rapport With Your Father?

Relationship

You and your father are from different generations, so, understandably, there are cultural differences between you. You may want other things from yourself than your father wants from you. If you're going to accept that your father doesn't understand you, try to empathize with them. Once you know where they are coming from, you are more likely to take the differences. From there, we work to resolve the conflicts that arise from these differences. Explaining your views to your father and giving him clarity may make you feel better, but you know that you often have to agree when you disagree. Finally, don't let your parents' approval completely control your self-esteem. It's okay to feel good and positive, even if your father doesn't fully understand who you are. So, if your dad isn't the worst, you should at least try to learn how to get along with him. I'm not even saying that. Here are some tips to get you started.

❖ Find out why it doesn't work in the first place.

The first step in improving your relationship with your father is to understand why it fell apart in the first place. "If you've never really gotten along with your dad, now is the time (if you haven't already) to work on finding out why you haven't been able to have a positive connection, connect with yourself, and feel a positive connection. How?"

Of course, you may already understand why you don't get along with your father. Maybe he wasn't growing physically or _emotional wellness_ly. Perhaps he never supported your ambitions the way you wanted him to, or he chose your brother over you. If you want to improve your relationship with your father, you need to address why you are having problems with your father in the first place.

❖ Repair a broken relationship

LOOK TO YOUR FATHER.

Picking up the phone can be scary, but it's necessary. You must tell him if you're serious about bonding with your dad. Say something straightforward to break the ice. A simple explanation is best. For example, "Hi, Dad, this is Paul. I thought of you and wanted to meet you. I look forward to hearing from you."

If you feel the phone is too difficult, send us an email.

Please include your contact information in anything you send so he can reply.

Consider asking your father about his choices.

If your father did things or made decisions that hurt you as a child, you may wonder why he did those things. You may have come up with a reason to explain this, but you may not know his true motives.

Examples of questions that can be used are, "Can you tell me why I got a job with this airline when I was a kid?" or "I would like to know more about your relationship with your new wife. How did you meet."

Be careful not to scold him.

Be open to listening to him.

❖ Build the relationship you've always wanted

FIND COMMON GROUND.

If you're trying to connect with your father, keep him engaged in activities and topics of common interest. These don't have to be life-changing moments. It can be something small like watching your favorite TV series or following your favorite team together. Most people feel more comfortable spending time with people who share their interests and perspectives.

If you disagree with politics or religion, stay away from these topics.

Reminding your dad of things, you did together when you were kids is a way to find common ground.

FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE.

Whenever you feel like defending or upsetting your father, think about what you like about him. You may find that he's always trying to calm others down, even if he makes a terrible joke. Maybe he's kind or patient. Be careful with these attributes. More likely to connect.

Focusing on his father's positive qualities did not mean he was without negative attributes. For example, when you were a child, he may have been aloof and distant, but that taught you to be spontaneous and independent. Perhaps you appreciate how he allowed himself to make and learn from mistakes.

If no positive qualities come to mind, take a break. Go away and take some time to collect your thoughts. Everyone has positive qualities. Your connection with your dad isn't established until you identify some of him.

EVEN AFTER YOU AND YOUR DAD HAVE LEARNED HOW TO TALK TO EACH OTHER WITHOUT ARGUING, I STILL RECOMMEND THIS STRATEGY. MUCH MORE FUN THAN SITTING. PLUS, YOU CAN DRINK AND LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE YOU PLAY! WIN-WIN, WIN.
