BreakupClarity App
I met Annie when I was going through the toughest phase of my life. I had just come out of a [relationship. After months of going on and off breaks in that [relationship and attempting very hard to work on it, we finally broke up. It was exhausting for me to be normal. I pretended my way through everyday life. Annie is a friend’s friend and we met at my friend’s place. She saw through me. She knew I was pretending to enjoy the party and was trying too hard to laugh and had concealer under my eyes to hide my tiredness and pain. She can see all of it with great clarity.
Normal social etiquette would call this intrusive behaviour but she asked me after a few hours, with honest eyes and a sensitive tone- “Are you fine?” Whatever was there in her tone, I started crying and told her I was not and why. She hugged me and told me that she had undergone a similar phase a year ago and she knew how it felt. Even though breakup are such common occurrences, while going through them I felt as if I was the only one who ever had to deal with them. It felt so comforting to hear from someone that I was not alone and that I will be able to cope with the breakup no matter how terrible it was.
When I broke up, I immersed myself in all kinds of distractions- the prime of them being shows and movies. I could not talk to anyone about what I was going through so shows became my respite. Sometimes they gave me the answers I was searching for or the motivation to work on myself. In one of the episodes of Sex and the City, the lead character, Carrie Bradshaw, a writer, sit down to complete her column for submission when her laptop acts up and she is left with a deadline but no work as she didn’t back it up anywhere. She felt tired and exhausted and said- “After all, computers crash, people die, and relationship fall apart. The best we can do is breathe and reboot.” That’s when it gave me the clarity that all I can do is breathe and reboot!
A lot feels lost with a breakup. Isn’t it? But you see, relationship are just a part of life and not the entire life itself. The first thing to do is to accept reality and not look back. Cut ties with your ex. Take him/her out of the picture of life and now work on beautifying it.
Cry your heart out and grieve all you want. Talk about it and also vent out your anger if you feel like it. If you feel there is no one you can talk to, do not shy away from taking professional help from a therapist. You can also take advice on the Clarity App. It is an emotional wellness support platform that helps people by listening to their issues and providing the needed advice. Know, that it is not the end of the world. Look at me, sitting right across you- if I can come out of the phase, so can you. It’s tough but it is doable. Trust me. The journey of coping with a terrible breakup may seem lonely and exhausting. But you never know, it may be enriched in the end.
Give yourself time. It sounds trite- but time heals. Patience is of paramount importance. Pay attention to your breathing. It should be soft and relaxing. Take care of your physical health. Try and eat healthy food and maintain a good 6 to 8 hours of sleep. These may seem very difficult. But with deteriorating mental health, physical health starts dwindling too.
The most exhilarating, puzzling and important [relationship that we have is the one we have with ourselves self- the [relationship we don’t work upon. Now is the best time to build a new [relationship with yourself. Love yourself the way you have been expecting the other person to love you all through. Love yourself as you love him. Indulge in hobbies and me-time. Do not do all this as an act of distraction but as an actual commitment.
With that, Annie sent me a soft copy of the book- “You Will Love Again: A Guide to Healing from Heartbreak” by Dr Shyam Bhat, which is not a very long or a tough read and helped her understand heartbreaks a lot. She hugged me and left and wished me luck on my journey towards healing.
A few days ago, I met Annie again and she asked me how I was doing. She noticed I looked better and healthier. I had taken her advice seriously and worked on them. She was happy for me and I couldn't thank Clarity App and Annie enough for being a ray of hope for me during dark times and for encouraging me to heal.
